moral dilemma: warning! discussion of breastmilk below.

i have backlogged many a freezer gallon bag of breastmilk. according to hideyo's spot check, we've got about 300 oz of frozen milk. between milk and grassfed beef, there is NO SPACE FOR ANYTHING ELSE. and i want that space back. i want my tj's frozen pizzas back. i want to store up summer's peaches for sam when he can eat real food. i want to save a few happy chickens from paul hain the chicken man. but we CAN'T, because it's full of milk.

so i've thought about donating it. i've had the opportunity to share with a mom (thanks, a) whose adopted daughter was in need of milk. and it felt good, because the Lord has provided amply for my baby, and even enough to share. but where to donate?

the san jose milk bank is well known and well respected. they have stringent requirements to make sure the milk is safe before giving it to babies. and apparently even cancer patients sometimes drink it (EW) as a potential treatment. but ... it's $3 an ounce. three dollars an ounce! that means there's like $900 sitting in my freezer. and i'm not comfortable with the idea that it's being sold. i know it needs to be processed and all, but three dollars an ounce! even if insurance covers it, not everyone who needs it has access to insurance and milk at $3/oz!

so i thought about putting a post on craigslist as a donation for someone in need. but i feel torn because there are so many things wrong with that. what if mik poachers come, take it, and sell it for $3/oz? and even though i'm sure my milk is delicious and safe (see: size of my child), any schmoe could do the same thing on craigslist and have hepatitis or sexually transmitted disease or something that could be transmitted through breastmilk. (sn: i don't know that std's can be transmitted through bm. i'm just saying.) so it's just such a shady thing to post. there are way too may variables to account for.

all the while, the milk is sitting in the freezer. and sam will probably never get to it.

so, my faithful few readers, what to do?? do you know of someone who needs milk? i'd be happy to share! should i put a post on craigslist and pray hard? should i proceed with the milk bank? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

My personal opinion: no on craigslist. I say go with the friend of a friend route, or send an email on something like PAMP (are you on that list? Alissa is...).
